Apply Reflection Effects to Shapes in PowerPoint 2011 for Mac

Learn how to apply reflection effects to shapes in PowerPoint 2011 for Mac.

Product/Version: PowerPoint 2011 for Mac

OS: Mac OS X

Effects are a cool feature in PowerPoint that lets your shapes stand out. No longer you have to be content with flat shapes that appear to be depressed within the slide itself. Having said that, moderation is the key, do not go overboard with the effects! In our series on Shape Effects in PowerPoint 2011, you have already explored how you can apply a Shadow Effect to any selected shape. In this tutorial, you will learn how you can quickly add reflection to a shape. So what's the difference between a shadow and a reflection? A shadow is typically of one color, normally gray and is influenced by the direction of a light source. Reflection is also dependent on light but it shows all the colors of the original object in a blurred way, as in the reflection on water or glass.

Note: Although you can add both shadow and Reflection effects to the same shape in PowerPoint 2011, it's good to use just one of these two effects in a shape, in the real world, rarely does an any object have both a shadow and a reflection.

Follow these steps to apply Reflection effects to a shape:

  1. Select the shape you want to apply the Reflection effect to, and double click it to activate the Format tab of the Ribbon (highlighted in red within Figure 1). Within this tab, locate the Shape Styles group and click the Effects button that you can see in Figure 1 (highlighted in blue).

Note: Format tab is a Contextual tab. Contextual tabs are special tabs in the Ribbon that are not visible all the time, they only make an appearance when you are working with a particular slide object which can be edited using special options.
  2. This brings up the Effects drop-down gallery, choose the Reflection option here to open the Reflection sub-gallery shown in Figure 2.
