PowerPoint and Presentation News - Issue 023

Issue 023 of PowerPoint and Presentation Stuff newsletter.

Previous Ezine Issue | Next Ezine Issue

Introduction

This ezine is somewhat special since its almost entirely composed of new product announcements. The fact that so many PowerPoint related products have been released in two weeks is amazing!

We first look at the new Microsoft Producer 2003 beta followed by some info on CrystalGraphics' new Ultimate Combo 11 Plus suite of PowerPoint add-ins. We then have a listing of Quick News - thereafter, we look at a new kind of PowerPoint template - it's called PowerPoint Charts. We follow this with a look at Color Picker, a new add-in from Corporate Imaging. PowerFinish has introduced a new series of templates for PowerPoint - they call it PowerDesign Sets. Finally, we look at CrystalGraphics' new Music add-in for PowerPoint.

Microsoft Producer 2003 Beta

Microsoft announced a beta version of Producer 2003 for PowerPoint. The product is now available as a free download from Office 2003 Preview site:

Microsoft Producer 2003 Overview

The 46.6 mb download can be installed on Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional and works with PowerPoint 2003 Beta 2 or PowerPoint 2002 (XP).

New features include an improved Synchronization Wizard. Producer 2003 also supports Windows Media 9 to achieve superior compression rates - according to Microsoft, you can see improvements of up to 20 percent for audio compression and 50 percent for video.

Producer 2003 also complies with existing e-Learning standards like IMS and SCORM.

A variable speed playback feature ensures that you can speed up or slow down presentations without changing the pitch of the presenter's voice. This feature requires Windows Media 9 on Windows XP Professional.

Quick News

Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu has launched Bullfighter, a great new tool that functions as an add-in within Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Bullfighter works a lot like the spelling checker, but focuses on jargon and readability rather than spelling mistakes. Bullfighter works only within PowerPoint and Word 2000 or later. It also installs only on Windows 2000 or Windows XP. More info.

You can enter the PowerPoint Live Sweepstakes for a free pass to the three-day event being held from October 12 to 15 at Tucson, AZ, United States - a $795 value. Entries close July 1st and winners will be contacted one week later. Enter your name here.

Yet another sweepstakes allows you to win an Atek Tote-Remote, a remote presentation controller and laser pointer. Entries close July 30th and winners will be announced a week later. Enter your name here.

Microsoft recently demonstrated GWindows (Gesture Windows), showing how a simple pair of hands and some well intentioned movement can potentially take the place of the mouse. The technology currently works with PowerPoint and Internet Explorer. More info.

PowerPoint Charts

Edward Osborn provides a different kind of PowerPoint template - his PowerPointCharts.com site offers the Presentation ChartPack, which in effect is a collection of preformatted PowerPoint chart templates that assist in quickly building up a series of professional quality chart visuals.

The ChartPack includes charts, graphs, and tables in various styles that can be adapted for generic use. Also included is a detailed manual that contains excellent tutorials.

The entire concept has been implemented in a refreshing, yet spartan style. All put together, I can safely assume that almost anyone can derive benefit from the Presentation ChartPack. More info.

Color Picker

Corporate Imaging has launched a new PowerPoint add-in called ColorPicker. ColorPicker is a great way to pick up colour values of fills, outlines, text, shadows and backgrounds - and thereafter apply them automatically to selected elements.

The ColorPicker homepage has more info.
