PowerPoint 2016 has an Online Video option that’s very helpful and allows you to insert videos from online video sites. This means that videos you insert are not limited to just the ones available on your system. You can choose from a variety of other video sources. And, this insertion happens within the PowerPoint interface; there's no need to open your web browser.

Follow these steps to insert online video clips in PowerPoint 2016 for Windows:

  1. Open a new presentation in PowerPoint. You will see that PowerPoint already has a new slide. Change the layout of this slide to Title Only by selecting the Home tab | Layout | Title Only option. Doing so results in the slide layout shown in Figure 1, below.

  3. Now select the Insert tab of the Ribbon, and click the Video button, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 2, below. And from the resultant drop-down menu, choose the Online Video option, as shown highlighted in blue within Figure 2.

  5. Doing so brings up the Insert Video dialog box, as shown in Figure 3, below.

  7. Within the Insert Video dialog box, you'll find a list of online video service providers, as shown in Figure 3, above. Additionally, if you are signed in within PowerPoint via your Microsoft Account on Windows 7 or Windows 8/10, you will see your OneDrive account and any other services connected.

  9. Does your Insert Video dialog box look different than what's shown in Figure 3, above? This change may be because you could be connected to different services via your Microsoft Account. Also, since this option is an online service, it's prone to continuous changes and updates.
  10. Options within the Insert Video dialog box are explained below, as marked in Figure 3, above.
  11. A. OneDrive

  13. B. YouTube

  15. C. From a Video Embed Code

  16. Within this option, you can just paste the video embed code and insert the video within your PowerPoint slides. To learn more refer to our Insert Video from Video Embed Code in PowerPoint 2016 for Windows tutorial.
  17. D. Also insert from

  18. Other than the options explained above, you may see additional video sources within this section. In this case, you can see that a Facebook option is available. To use this option, you first have to connect your Facebook account to your Microsoft account. Explore more in our Add Services in PowerPoint 2016 for Windows tutorial.
  19. Choose any of the video sources, and select the video you want to add to your slide.
  20. Make sure to save your presentation often.

Cannot Access the Insert Video dialog box?

Cannot access the Insert Video dialog box, as shown in Figure 3 previously on this page? That may be because you are not connected online or Microsoft's servers are facing some temporary connectivity issues. You may see a different dialog box, as shown in Figure 4, below.
