Similar to how you change an individual shape within the SmartArt, you can resize shapes within a SmartArt graphic. This resizing can be helpful if you want one shape to be larger than the others, or maybe you want one shape to stand out. Whatever be your reason to resize these shapes, PowerPoint allows you to do so effortlessly.

Follow these steps to resize individual shapes within a SmartArt graphic in PowerPoint 2013 for Windows:

  1. Select any shape within your SmartArt graphics that you want to resize. We have selected the circle in the center, as shown in Figure 1, below.
  2. Doing so will activate the two contextual tabs on the Ribbon. These are the SmartArt Tools Design and the SmartArt Tools Format tabs, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 1. Activate the SmartArt Tools Format tab by clicking on it.

  4. Contextual Tabs

  5. The SmartArt Tools Design and SmartArt Tools Format tabs are contextual tabs. These tabs are special tabs in the Ribbon that are not visible all the time. They only make an appearance when you are working with a particular slide object which can be edited using special options.
  6. Within the SmartArt Tools Format tab, click either the Larger or Smaller button, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 2, below, to resize your selected shape as required.
  7. Larger and Smaller buttons

  8. Alternatively, you can also place the cursor over the selected shape's handles (four white square handles on the corners, and on the sides). Then drag the handles to attain the desired size. Learn more in our Resizing Shapes in PowerPoint 2013 tutorial.
  9. Figure 3, below, shows the selected circle resized. If you compare Figures 1 and 3 you will notice that the selected circle has become smaller.

  11. Restore Shapes

  12. You can restore the original size of any shape which you resize. To do so, right-click the shape you want to restore the size for, and then choose the Reset Shape option in the contextual menu, as shown in Figure 4, below.
