If you use PowerPoint Online extensively, you will want to get more templates and Themes for PowerPoint. But did you know that Microsoft makes it quite easy for you to get these templates and Themes from within PowerPoint Online? Further, there's no way to save and use these templates and Themes from within PowerPoint Online without downloading and uploading them on your own! We will explore how you can use these scenarios to your advantage in this article.

Everything Looks Different?

Unlike desktop applications, both OneDrive and PowerPoint Online are constantly evolving much faster. That may explain why screenshots on this page sport an interface different from what you see when you log in.

There are two ways to get more Templates within PowerPoint Online:

  1. Open the Presentation Gallery and click the See more templates link, highlighted in red within Figure 1.
  2. See more templates link within Presentation Gallery

  3. Alternatively, access PowerPoint Online's Backstage View and select the New option, as shown highlighted in blue within Figure 2. Here, at the bottom of the available Themes, click the More on Office.com link (highlighted in red within Figure 2).
  4. More on Office.com link within Backstage View

Either of the above ways will open the Templates page on Office.com, as shown in Figure 3.

As marked in Figure 3, above, you can search for the templates in 3 major criteria, that are explained below:

A. Favorites By App

Click to see three more options: Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, as shown in Figure 3 above. Excel option will provide you with templates for Excel only. Similarly, the PowerPoint and Word options will provide you with templates for PowerPoint and Word only. You just need to click on the required template to download it.

B. Category

Click to open a list of various categories as shown in Figure 4. Use the scrollbar to see more categories.

Select the presentation name

Click on any category to bring up templates for that category. In Figure 5 you can see that we have selected the Winter category, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 5 and on the right side of Figure 5 you can see the templates for Winter category. Use the scrollbar towards the right of the templates to access more templates within the selected category. Look at the bottom right corner of every Template thumbnail to see the name of the App for which the template has been made, as shown highlighted in blue within Figure 5.

Click to open a list of various events and occasions as shown in Figure 6. Use the scrollbar to see more events. Just click on the required event to bring up templates related to that event.

Search for the required template and just click on it. This will open a window with some information about the template being downloaded, as shown in Figure 7. Click the Download button to download the template to your local drive. If you downloaded a PowerPoint template, you will need to open it in a desktop version of PowerPoint. Then save the template file (POTX) as a normal PowerPoint file (PPTX). Then you can upload this PPTX file to OneDrive, as explained in our Uploading PowerPoint File to OneDrive tutorial. You can similarly upload any template, including the ones you download from another template site.

Pictures in Presentations

Is a picture is worth a thousand words? You probably have heard this adage so often that we decided not to repeat this phrase throughout this book! Now here’s some more info: the human brain uses a larger part of its area to store visual information rather than textual content. And that’s possibly because a picture describes so much more than text.
