Export Presentation to MPEG-4 Movie in PowerPoint 2013 for Windows

When PowerPoint 2010 first introduced saving PowerPoint presentation as WMV movie directly -- it just worked as oasis in the desert. It did worked well and most of the users were happy -- later MP4 movie format becomes more popular than WMV movie format. This made Microsoft improve the PowerPoint to movie function in the newest PowerPoint 2013, which enables to save PowerPoint as MPEG-4 movie. This is a good change because most of the portable devices like iPad, iPhone or Android devices support MP4 movie instead of WMV movie - and it is easy to share.

In this tutorial you'll learn how to export your presentation into MPEG-4 movie format:
  1. Open any presentation within PowerPoint 2013 which you want to export as MPEG-4 movie. Now, access the File menu and choose Export option (highlighted in blue within Figure 1).

  2. This brings up the Export options within the Backstage view, as shown in Figure 2. From the options on the right side of the screen choose Create a Video (highlighted in red within Figure 2).

  3. This brings up the Create a Video options, as shown in Figure 3.

    Within Create a Video section you'll find few options which are explained below -- as marked in Figure 3, above:

    A. Computer & HD Displays

    Select this option to bring up a drop-down menu as shown in Figure 4. Here you can choose to create a video for Computer & HD Displays, Internet and DVD, and Portable Devices.

    B. Don't Use Recorded Timings and Narrations

    Select this option and then, do one of the following: If you did not record and time voice narration and laser pointer movements, click Don't Use Recorded Timings and Narration option. If you recorded and timed narration and pointer movements, choose the Use Recorded Timings and Narrations.

    C. Seconds spent on each slide

    Basically the default time spent on each slide is set to 5 seconds. you can change this by typing in the seconds within the Seconds to spend on each slide box, or use the up and down arrow to increase or decrease the seconds.

    D. Create Video

    Once all the settings are made click the Create Video button.
  4. This brings up the Save As dialog box, as shown in Figure 6. Here, enter a file name for the video and choose a supported video file format, for this tutorial we choose MPEG-4 Video and then click the save Save button.

    Note: You can track the progress of the video creation by looking at the Status Bar. This may take up to several hours depending on the length of the video and the complexity of the presentation.

  5. Once the video is created -- double click it to preview it.
