Differences between PowerPoint and Microsoft Sway

Explore the differences between PowerPoint and Microsoft Sway.

Product/Version: Microsoft Sway

OS: Works in a browser, or as an app

If the question is about differences between PowerPoint and Sway, then there are certainly more differences than similarities. Both are different products, intended for different audiences, and even the way in which you create and save files is not so similar for both programs. Yes, there are similarities—and that may be because both create presentations, and can include text, pictures, multimedia, and more.

The most important thing to realize is that Sway is not a replacement for PowerPoint at all. In fact, both Sway and PowerPoint work well with each other, and complement each other. Yes, it is perfectly acceptable that the same person or organization uses both Sway and PowerPoint. Sway is something that comes preloaded with so many templates and layouts, and you can create and share something created in Sway almost instantly. Sway, however is not extensible the way PowerPoint is—you cannot add a plug-in to Sway (at least not at the time of writing). Most users who have worked with both Sway and PowerPoint agree that this is a classic case of comparing apples and oranges.

Peter Wu, who is from the PowerPoint product team shared this table he used to compare Sway and PowerPoint, and this table is shared with his permission:

Pictures in Presentations

Is a picture is worth a thousand words? You probably have heard this adage so often that we decided not to repeat this phrase throughout this book! Now here’s some more info: the human brain uses a larger part of its area to store visual information rather than textual content. And that’s possibly because a picture describes so much more than text.
