Beauty and the Beast: Eyeful's Adaptation in PowerPoint

Callout Sample 01: Arrow Pointing to a Map

Callouts are amazing – with just an arrow and some text, you can point at something and add a whole new meaning to any picture! One of my favorite things to do is collect examples of how people use callouts. Just a few weeks ago, I saw this example in TIME magazine where a callout is not used to indicate text but instead a position on a world map! This is such a simple trick, yet so useful.

Callout Sample 02: Colored Callouts

Here's another interesting callout sample where each callout is denoted by a different color. Frankly, the implementation is not too great -- I don't like the choice of some text and callout colors which are too light -- notice the pink right at the bottom -- we had to Photoshop it a bit to make it visible -- even the results don't look too great with this color. However, the general idea works well -- and this is certainly an interesting way of using callouts.

Handmade Slides: Pushpins for PowerPoint

These “pushpin” graphics are already placed in PowerPoint slides. Just copy them and paste within your slides to create a look that makes a picture, shape, or anything else appear as if it has been pushed onto a surface, board, or wall with a pin!

These ready-made pushpins are already within PowerPoint slides, and have been provided in five colors. Just copy them and paste them on your slides.

All these pushpins can be rotated and resized, as required. Since they are essentially pictures, all types of edits that you can do with pictures work with them too! To make them stand out, try to use PowerPoint’s built-in shadow effects.

Creating and Editing Custom Dictionaries

Although PowerPoint provides a spelling dictionary which contains a list of all common words, you might be working on a particular project that uses uncommon words not found in everyday language. You could edit a custom dictionary or load a ready-made third-party dictionary within PowerPoint. But you can actually create your own dictionary that includes a set of words for a particular project. So, if you need to do a legal presentation for a client once a year, you could create a separate dictionary for just this one project, and then edit it as required within a text editor such as Notepad.

Disable, Enable, and Set the Default Custom Dictionary

Any custom dictionary that you create within PowerPoint or any other Microsoft Office program is used by all the Office applications installed on your computer. Also, any changes made to the list of words within a custom dictionary reflect in proofing tools of all Office applications. Each logged-in user has a default custom dictionary called RoamingCustom.dic, stored in a separate folder for each local user.

Sharing Custom Dictionaries

Each logged-in user has a default custom dictionary accessible within PowerPoint and other Microsoft Office programs called RoamingCustom.dic. Additionally, you can create and use many more custom dictionaries. Over time, your custom dictionaries may become a very useful resource, especially since any custom dictionary loaded is used by all the Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Let us assume that you have added several words to the custom dictionaries over the last 4 or 5 years, and now you need to move to a new computer.

Embed Fonts

Have you ever been in a situation where your presentation looked so awesome with some amazing typography, but when you opened the same presentation on another computer, the text looked positively terrible! This behavior may happen if the font you used is not available on the other computer. The best solution to this problem is to use safe fonts that are available on most computers, or you may also explore the option to embed fonts in your PowerPoint presentation.
