In PowerPoint when you type text within a placeholder, the default result is that you create a bulleted list. Also, when you import an outline, all the content other than the slide titles ends up becoming bulleted text. While this may work in some situations, at other times you may want to either remove the bullets altogether, or convert it to a numbered list.

Tip: Do you want to change bulleted list to a numbered list in all slides? Most people would not want to do so, but just in case you do, then the instructions on this page are for working with individual slides in Normal view. To apply these changes to all slides, follow the same steps within the Slide Master view.

In this tutorial, you will learn how you can change a bulleted list to a numbered list in PowerPoint 2013:

  1. Open any presentation or create a new one. Then navigate to a slide that contains bulleted text -- select the entire placeholder by clicking on the edge of the placeholder (see Figure 1).

  2. Access the Home tab of the Ribbon, and click the Numbering button, shown highlighted in red within Figure 2.

  3. This changes the bulleted list to numbered list of the selected text, as shown in Figure 3 (compare Figures 1 and 3).

Tip: Did you want your numbered list in a different style? Maybe A, B, C, ... rather than 1, 2, 3 ...? Or did you want some other numbered style? To do so, explore our Change the Numbered List Style in PowerPoint 2013 tutorial.
