Where is PowerPoint?

You cannot locate PowerPoint 2007 on your computer?

Yes, I know this happens -- mainly in scenarios like these:

  • In an office, where sys admins are responsible for what's installed on your computer -- and they insist that you have PowerPoint on your system!
  • You bought a new desktop or laptop that came with a license for Microsoft Office. Even that's not a sure reason for you to have PowerPoint, as we'll explore later in this article.
  • Or maybe you just lost the shortcut that used to launch PowerPoint altogether.

Follow these step to find out if you have PowerPoint 2007 in your system or not. Since PowerPoint 2007 only installs on Windows XP and Windows Vista, we provide instructions for both OSs:

For users of Windows XP:

  1. Choose Start | Run, as show in Figure 1. You can also skip this step by using a keyboard combination of Windows key + R.

    Run
    Figure 1: Run

  2. This opens the Run dialog box as shown in Figure 2.

    Run
    Figure 2: Run dialog box

  3. Type "powerpnt.exe" without the quotes in the dialog box, as shown in Figure 3 -- and click OK.

    Figure 3: Run PowerPoint

  4. If you have PowerPoint installed, it should launch now -- otherwise you'll see an error message.

For users of Windows Vista:

  1. Choose Start | All Programs | Accessories | Run, as shown in Figure 4.

    Run
    Figure 4: Run

  2. This opens the Run dialog box, as shown in Figure 5.

    Run
    Figure 5: Run

  3. Type "powerpnt.exe" without the quotes in the dialog box, as shown in Figure 6 -- and click OK.

    Figure 6: Run PowerPoint

  4. If you have PowerPoint installed, it should launch now -- otherwise you'll see an error message.

If you see the PowerPoint splash screen, it means you have PowerPoint installed in your system -- again this may be PowerPoint 2007, or an older version. Otherwise, you'll see an error message that says it can't find powerpnt.exe.

I have Word, why can't I find PowerPoint?

And even if you have Microsoft Office installed doesn't mean you have PowerPoint as well. The reason is that there are some Office editions which do not include PowerPoint -- this is not so true with newer releases like Office 2007 where only only the Basic edition does not include PowerPoint. Microsoft has a comparison of various Office 2007 editions on its site... If you have a version of Office 2007 without PowerPoint, the solution is to get a standalone copy of PowerPoint.

You may be eligible for upgrade pricing to PowerPoint 2007 from Office 2007 Basic or an older version of Microsoft Office -- this page has more info...

Adobe Captivate's Edit View

In an earlier post last week, I discussed Adobe Captivate's views and compared them to PowerPoint's deafult views. I also explained about the Storyboard View. In this post, I'll look at Captivate's Edit view, which in many ways is similar to PowerPoint's Normal view. If you are not already in Edit view within Captivate, choose the View drop-down in the toolbar, and select Edit View.
