Resize Shapes within a SmartArt Graphic in PowerPoint 2013

Learn how to resize shapes within a SmartArt graphic in PowerPoint 2013.

Product / Version: Microsoft PowerPoint 2013

OS: Windows 7 and higher

Similar to how you can change an individual shape within the SmartArt, you can even resize shapes within a SmartArt graphic. This can be helpful if you want one shape to be larger than the others -- maybe you want one shape to stand out? Whatever be the reason behind you wanting to resize these shapes, this tutorial will explore how you can resize individual shapes within a SmartArt graphic in PowerPoint 2013:

  1. Select any shape within SmartArt graphic which you want to resize. In this example, notice that we have selected the circle in the center (see Figure 1). This will activate two contextual SmartArt Tools tabs on the Ribbon: these are the SmartArt Tools Design and the SmartArt Tools Format tabs (highlighted in red within Figure 1). Activate the SmartArt Tools Format tab by clicking on it.

  2. Within the SmartArt Tools Format tab, click either Larger or Smaller button (highlighted in red within Figure 2) to resize your selected shape as required.

Alternatively, you can also place the cursor over the selected shape's handles (four white square handles on the corners, and on the sides). Then drag the handle(s) to get your desired size. Learn more about resizing shapes in PowerPoint 2013.
  3. Figure 3 shows the selected circle resized. If you compare Figures 1 and 3 you will see that the selected circle has become smaller.

Note: You can restore the original size of any shape which you resize -- to do that, right-click the shape you want to restore the size for, and then choose the Reset Shape option in the contextual menu, as shown in Figure 4.

  4. This will set your shape's size to the default size within the SmartArt graphic.
  5. Save your presentation often.
