Signage24 is a hosting service through which you can distribute your presentations as digital signage worldwide -- almost like an automated billboard. This is a huge thing -- and this sort of service can change the way digital signage is pushed to multiple output streams.

Kurt Dupont from PresentationPoint sent me this picture:
The picture shows a large video wall at a Belgian concert hall that comprises nine 50 inch plasma screens placed together. These were installed last week by a reseller of PresentationPoint -- put together, they display live Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. Announcements and concert infomation is dynamically read from a database that's sourced into PowerPoint using PresentationPoint products. The high resolution PowerPoint presentations, optionally combined with video, can be planned with a scheduling tool.

Signage24 is a new service site from PresentationPoint, creators of several PowerPoint add-ins. In this Indezine exclusive, Kurt Dupont who heads PresentationPoint discusses this new hosting service, and compares it to some not-so-similar offerings.
Geetesh: Tell us more about Signage24, and how did this evolve.
 Kurt: Signage24 is a new online service from PresentationPoint. With Signage24, you can distribute your presentations (information, advertising, events etc) worldwide in order to run as an automated billboard. In the Audio Visual world this functionality is known as 'digital signage'.
Just like Hotmail for email messages and hosting companies for websites, Signage24 is a hosted solution to upload your presentations to your company account, and schedule them to play on a given player or group of players. You can now design your advertising pages in Microsoft PowerPoint and distribute them automatically to your shops or POS systems.
The big advantage of digital signage and dynamic signage is that you can promote your products and offers much better. It makes for example no sense to promote a Scotch whisky in the morning. That is something you plan in the evening. In the morning you promote products like cereals and a healthy breakfast or lunch. So with digital signage, you can better target your audience -- that will result in much more sales than before.
Currently our service works with Microsoft PowerPoint presentations only, but soon new players can be expected like Flash, MPG movies, images etc.
Geetesh: How is Signage24 different from other sharing platforms like SlideShare, YouTube, etc.
Kurt: It's difficult to compare Signage24 with services like YouTube. Those services are interactive. Although it is a library of multimedia files, you always decide when and what to watch.
The service of Signage24 is also a system where you upload your files but in addition you set up your playlists and you specify when a playlist of presentations is shown at where and when. For the viewers of your playlist, there is no way to change that. If they look at a Signage24 monitor, they will see your advertising!

PresentationPoint has launched a new presentation distribution service to schedule and distribute your presentations worldwide. Free accounts are available although paid accounts come with more bells and whistles.
Think of Signage24 as something similar to a web hosting company -- only in this case, they offer hosting and online delivery for your presentations. You'll also have to install a small player program and configure it before you upload presentations and other linked files. Then you define a playlist of files and schedule when the playlist should be displayed on the Signage24 players.

OutlookPoint is a product that lets you use your Outlook content such as messages, calendar, contacts, notes, tasks, etc. as a database source. It doesn't stop there -- using DataPoint as an interfacing product that links PowerPoint to database sources, OutlookPoint can let you send an email that converts itself to a presentation slide in an instant! How more dynamic can you get with PowerPoint?
And in this Indezine exclusive, we have Kurt Dupont who heads PresentationPoint -- creators of OutlookPoint, DataPoint, and other amazing PowerPoint add-ins.
Geetesh: OutlookPoint is not a conventional program -- there's probably no other application that does the same things -- so how did OutlookPoint evolve?
Kurt: Indeed, OutlookPoint is a special product in our business software but the application is definitely related to our main product DataPoint. With DataPoint you can display real-time information in a slide show, coming from various data sources. This kind of functionality is widely used at airports, schools and factories. On the other hand DataPoint is used to regenerate presentations with up-to-date content like sales reports, product information and availability statistics etc.
OutlookPoint is only interesting for the first type of presentations, what we call online presentations. With an online presentation you need a database to retrieve the dynamic information from and most applications are simply displaying messages or announcements, or are welcoming people at a company by displaying their name and company name at a large flat panel screen at the reception desk. The type of database needed here is very basic but requires a database, installation, training and a graphical user interface.

This is what OutlookPoint does. You can use Microsoft Outlook or Exchange to host the public folders for DataPoint display purposes. You simply identify which folders or maps need to be exported to the OutlookPoint database. Then you use your existing Outlook interface to enter and maintain the map content. So for example you create a new appointment beween 9:00 and 10:00 and its subject will be displayed between 9:00 and 10:00 on the flat panel screen. Interesting options like appointment recurrence etc are included automatically.
The same can be done with email messages, contacts, notes and tasks. With DataPoint you decide what information is displayed.
All of this is very basic, but by using this add-on you eliminate the need of building a new database and user interface.
Geetesh: Can you share some case studies and usage patterns for OutlookPoint.
Kurt: Sure. Many possible applications are possible with DataPoint and OutlookPoint.
- At a school you can use the Outlook calendar map to store your class schedules and teacher absences and use a mail map to store general announcements.
- At a factory you can setup an email address per production lane and send a message like 'we are on schedule' and send it to lane4@mycompany.com.
- By making use of this standard way of messaging, you can even send that type of message from an internet cafe in Bangkok to your company and have it displayed on a plasma screen at production lane 4.
