I was doing a review of a collection of music tracks for PowerPoint, and I decided I did not want to explain the entire process of inserting sounds within PowerPoint slides on a review page. So I did the next best thing: a new page in Indezine's Learn section that shows you how you can insert sound within PowerPoint. This covers PowerPoint 97, 2000, 2002, and 2003.

I have Microsoft Office 2003. I had no problems adding a music file from the online clip art selections to my presentation and it plays perfectly during the presentation on my computer. However, when I saved it as a PowerPoint Show (.pps) and emailed it to people within my office who have the same set up and softwares that I do, the music did not play at all for the viewer I emailed the show to. I even tried to email to my home where I am working off of 2007 version and still nothing. Do you know what I might be doing wrong or why this is happening?

Cheri, make sure you place the sound/music file in the same folder as the PowerPoint file (PPT/PPS/PPTX/PPSX) -- and then insert the sound/music. Thereafter, copy the entire folder to another computer, and you will find that the sound/music plays well!

Thanks for the reply! Can I bother you with a question regarding your reply? So I would do this even though it's a sound file of piano music I inserted from Microsoft Office Clips? Because it does not allow me to save this to my computer, only insert into the presentation. Also, the intent will be to send the PPS to a prospect so it plays seamlessly like a commercial once it is clicked open - so if I had to send the sound file with the PPS, I would have to tell the recipient to save everything before opening it?

Cheri, insert the sound from the Microsoft Clip Gallery -- then locate the sound on your computer. Then delete the sound from the slide, and reinsert after placing it in the same folder.
So how do you locate the sound on your computer? Normally right-click the sound on the slide and see if there's something called Options that shows you the path.
Or you can actually drag the sound from the Clip Gallery to the folder without even inserting it in PowerPoint.
If all else fails, save your PowerPoint as an HTML web page -- you'll find the sound in the exported folder.

I have Microsoft Office 2007. I am having trouble adding music to my presentations. The sequence seems to go well, but when I play the show, there is no music. Additionally, in working with Sound Options in Custom Animation, it often undoes my previously saved slide transitions and transitions timing.
I have the MP3 file in the same folder as the presentations, but I am unable to hear the musice when I play the slide show.
I have chosen "Play Automatically", but am unsure if when I open the Custom Animation, if I undo that selection as in the "Timing" dialogue box, the default selection is "After Previous".
Any suggestions on what I might do to correct this? Thanks.

You don't have to alter anything in the Custom Animation task pane iin PowerPoint 2007 -- follow the steps on this page: Sound across Slides in PowerPoint 2007

Thanks, Geetesh. I have done it that way as well, but I am still unable to hear any music. I have carefully followed all instructions, but still no results.
Any other suggestions?

Does this happen with just one of the MP3s -- or with all of them? Also, does the same MP3 play in Windows Media Player?

Hello, Geetesh - Yes, it happens with all MP3s, and all play well in Windows Media Player.
The other exasperating thing is once I do insert the file, and then play the show, not only do I not hear the music, but all my previous slide transitions (simple cross fades timed at 5 second intervals) no longer work.

Geetesh - Also, I do weekly maintenance and disk de-fragging and optimization, so my files are always in optimum storage and access configuration.
