At the spring DEMO@15 conference, I had the opportunity to see a number of cool new products ranging from security devices to mobile blogging platforms. However, nothing I covered at the Scottsdale, Ariz., conference generated more reader feedback or questions though than a product called Ovation from Serious Magic Inc. Microsoft Corp. has decided to open up its Office file formats and has submitted the formats to be considered for recognition as a formal standard by Ecma International, which will develop the documentation and make it available to the industry. Opening the MS Office document format takes a step towards eventually ensuring that those customers who do not use Office will be able to work with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents without having to buy the software. PowerPoint 12 reorganises its interface and dresses up presentations with a vast library of templates. Microsoft is redesigning the interface of PowerPoint 12 to mirror the changes being made across the Office 12 suite, allowing Word 12 and Excel 12 to share the same charts and diagrams. Dumping the toolbar boxes and the drop-down menus of the past, each PowerPoint 12 window features a tabbed banner, called a ribbon, that surfaces commands in response to your task at hand. The early beta version of PowerPoint 12 that we tested reveals a new graphics engine, code-named IGX, that aims to turn up the 'wow' factor on your presentations. More on the ZDNet UK site...

Microsoft released the first test version of Office 12, the next incarnation of its ubiquitous desktop suite. The company said it is offering up the Beta 1 code to about 10,000 pre-approved testers, with a broader test release slated for the spring. Microsoft is promising a final version of Office 12 for the second half of next year, around the same time as the company releases the Vista upgrade to its Windows operating system. Although details are still sketchy at this time, partners close to Microsoft have indicated that work has begun on a version of Office 12 for mobile devices. Microsoft Watch reported that the update will include refreshes of the mobile versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, which have been included with Windows-based PDAs for years, in addition to a mobile version of the company's OneNote product. The PowerPoint presentations from my clients kept piling up, and I finally added a new hard disk to my old Mac. I was needlessly delaying the transition - Shirt Pocket's Super Duper! software makes it so easy to duplicate and backup your hard disk. I should know - I've used their product six times in two days so that I ended up with partition sizes that I could live with. Fortunately, I always ended up with exactly the same files I started with! Check out SuperDuper! here...

Already, the company has announced plans for Office Live and Windows Live, two products that are ad-supported complements to its existing desktop software. But in the internal documents, Microsoft workers maintain that the software maker may be forced to go further if rivals launch ad-supported versions of popular programs such as PowerPoint. Here's something so different! Duarte Design organized a pumpkin carving competition, and I asked Nancy Duarte of Duarte Design about this event:

"Each year the company does a pumpkin carving competition and send it out to our clients. They've come to expect it now and we start to get calls during the last week of October with folks asking when we're sending the URL over to them. This year we had the highest participation 'cuz the prize was an iPod Nano. We also had the most votes to the site with a whoping 1850, we were very pleased".
