PresenterNet, provider of online interactive Web conferencing services, has demonstrated new online applications enabled by integration of Macromedia FlashPaper2. PresenterNet now integrates FlashPaper2 files from any source into contiguous online presentations, so that FlashPaper source documents appear as part of a traditional slide group. Because the Macromedia product can convert any printable document to Flash, PresenterNet users routinely include extra-large documents like complex spreadsheets, flow charts, detailed blueprints and geographic maps along with their traditional PowerPoint slides. This is a 350K Java library that requires no installation of PowerPoint. It can render any slide into a "java.awt.image.BufferedImage", for conversion to PNG/JPEG/etc. In conjuction with the open-source iText library it can also convert presentations to PDF. More on the Root Beer blog...

Wireless presentation specialist Infrablue is looking to establish a UK channel following the launch of its latest product, the Irma presentation system. Microsoft brought out its biggest guns Friday to push its Office Systems conglomeration as a development platform. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates spoke to about 800 ISVs and corporate developers on Friday morning, touting his company's embrace of XML and Web Services standards with its Office franchise as a good starting point for application development. To cut a long story short, let me tell you that my first movie capture of a PowerPoint presentation with Snapz Pro X exceeded my expectations. I even played it on Windows using the QuickTime Player and it was smoother than any other presentation capture that I had done on that platform. Students in Dan Carroll's physics class at Yorktown High School in Virginia turned in their science projects last week. Some of them prepared their work the way generations of students have done, with labels and charts pasted onto display boards of a prescribed size. But others were able to bypass last-minute trips to the store for cardboard, glue sticks and markers, because MrCarroll encourages the use of PowerPoint software. "It's hard to glue things on those boards, and some kids don't do it well," MrCarroll said. Technology is rapidly changing the world of science, but it is only now starting to change the world of the science project, a ritual of the academic year. Now that computers are second nature to many students, some teachers are abandoning the traditional cardboard displays in favour of electronic files.
