Making your point more powerful

As a presenter, I like using PowerPoint. Although I don’t like having the slides in a fixed sequence, and I worry that dimming the lights will give my audience unneeded assistance in falling asleep, I do like the way PowerPoint enables me to emphasize and illustrate my points with highlighted text, graphs, and photos. There’s something about those big, fat, color letters that makes the words more interesting. Dr. Stephen Wilbers explains more...

Bullet-point cinémathèque

...The presentation, Seid recalls, was “a satire, somewhat stilted and a bit primitive, of Mexican President Vicente Fox’s economic policies, complete with ticky-tacky clip-art and cheesy canned applause.” He loved it. Thus inspired, Seid decided to investigate how many people were using the ubiquitous software, which for two decades has induced yawns in conference rooms worldwide, for other than corporate purposes. Put PowerPoint on your iPod Photo

This week’s How-To is a quick and simple one if you have an iPod Photo and use PowerPoint or Keynote and don’t want to lug around a computer—you can just plug in to a projector or a TV. This will also work with a Portable Media Center, or any other photo playing device that can be a video source. Also included in this How-To are some other ways to play your favorite slides, like using a pair of VGA goggles (that one’s for the geeks). Phillip Torrone explains more on the Engadget site...

Interactive PowerPoint with Tablet PCs

Many professors use PowerPoint presentations as part of their lectures. As everybody knows, PowerPoint can be dull. If you add in a Tablet PC, it can be more interactive. You already have the PowerPoint up on a screen. But instead of static slides, you can write notes on top of the presentation. Beth Simon discusses more on SignOnSanDiego.com...

DOGGONE Communication

According to Templeton, the first thing most people do when they hear they have a presentation to give is try to get out of doing it. That is followed by panic before the presenter actually starts to prepare. The first action a person should take after finding out he must give a presentation is to sit down and brainstorm for 15 minutes and take notes, Templeton says. “The thing is, your brain continues to work on it even though you don’t realize it,” she says. AV Professionals, Your Key to Peace of Mind

"This is always a moment of truth for me. If you were at one of the big conference centers, these types of requests may prompt a call to the convention support supervisor who calls the AV support manager who in turn dispatches the AV professional who then tells you that he doesn’t do power cords. There’s another union that handles that stuff, all before disappearing into the crowd 5-minutes before your set-up is complete. No such challenge here. Todd was a real pro." Jim Endicott tells more on the Presenters University site...

Easing the Communications Need

That's one of the interesting remarks from Ray Ozzie, founder and CEO of Groove Networks Inc., as he continues his conversation with Computerworld, focusing on how collaboration software meets the needs of various types of customers. First Look: NEC's Slick Wi-Fi Projector

NEC's LT265 can connect to an 802.11g wireless network, but getting it set up can be tricky. NEC's LT265 wireless-ready digital DLP projector has a smooth, egg-shell-white veneer that immediately makes it an attention-getter. I found much to like about this unit, but also a few drawbacks -- including an overly complex wireless setup. More info on PCWorld.com...
